The earlier breast cancer is detected, the higher the chances of recovery.

Researchers have developed an ultrasound device that detects early-stage breast cancer. The special feature: The device can be worn in the bra.

Detected at an early stage, breast cancer can be treated effectively. The chances of survival are correspondingly high. In the future, a wearable bra with ultrasound could help detect the disease at an early stage. The device was developed by researchers from the USA and described in the journal “Science Advances”.

How does the bra with ultrasound against breast cancer work?

The device is a hard plastic shell with small holes. This is attached to the bra using magnetic buttons. The bowl is connected to a tracker that works like a small ultrasound device.

The patient can move the mini scanner in an S-shaped movement over the breast and thus generate images from different angles. The application is easy, no expert help is required.

Images up to eight centimeters tissue depth

Canan Dagdeviren, a physicist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), the study’s lead author, says of the device: “It’s portable, easy to use and allows for user-friendly real-time monitoring of breast tissue.” The images that the bra generates with ultrasound are qualitatively comparable to images from screening devices, such as those from cancer diagnosis centers. Recordings are possible up to a tissue depth of eight centimeters.

The ultrasound bra could be particularly helpful for high-risk patients suffering from interval cancer. These tumors are called interval cancer as they appear between two scheduled examinations and are sometimes particularly aggressive.

The device should be available in three to four years

So far, the images that the bra generates with ultrasound have to be evaluated on a device in a doctor’s office, for example. However, the researchers are working on developing a device the size of a smartphone that will be able to display the images at home in the future. The researchers estimate that the device will be available on the market in three or four years.
