Starting in April, the new CT scanner that arrived on March 20 at the imaging service of the Dr. Verdi Cevallos Balda Hospital of the Ministry of Public Health (MSP), located in Portoviejo, Manabí province, will begin operations.

The equipment was received as a donation by the Government of Japan. It is a Canon unit, model TSX-3038, capable of making 160 simultaneous cuts (tomographic images) per rotation at 0.35 seconds with a thickness of 0.5 mm. This device is high-tech in terms of image quality and reduces the emitted radiation dose by 65%.

Juan Carlos Cantos, head of the imaging service at the health home, explained that “the tomograph uses ‘Double Slice Technology’, which provides the best image resolution, reconstructing twice the number of slices per acquisition, from the same volume of data”.

On the other hand, “its examination table supports up to 300 kg of weight, which is why it is useful in patients with obesity, adults or children, allowing simple, contrast-enhanced CT scans or angiotomographies to be performed,” added the official. The team also has an ultra sensitive detector.

Carlos Almeida, manager of the Hospital, assured that “this donation represents a commitment that the MSP complies with Verdi Cevallos”, a criterion with which María Cecilia Guillén, Zonal 4 Health coordinator, agreed, noting that the tomograph will benefit an important segment of the population.

During 2022, the Hospital generated nearly 2,800 tomography orders for its patients. The service will be fully operational in April, after completing the disassembly, installation, testing and training processes for imaging area personnel.
