Portugal Shines at Paris 2024 Paralympics: Celebrating 100 Medals and Six New Achievements

by time news
The six medals already won at the Paris2024 Games, which end on Sunday, add to the 94 achieved in the previous 11 participations, with the only exception being the first one in 1972 when Portugal did not reach the podium.

With two days until the end of the Paris2024 Games, Portugal’s medal tally includes 27 gold, 31 silver, and 42 bronze medals.

Athletics leads the list of sports with the most medals, totaling 56, followed by boccia with 27 and swimming with 10, while cycling has three and judo, canoeing, table tennis, and football 7 each have one.

The 100th Portuguese medal in the Paralympic Games was achieved today at the Champs de Mars Arena in Paris by Djibrilo Iafa, who won bronze in the -73 kg J1 category for total blindness.

After winning bronze in Tokyo2020, Miguel Monteiro achieved gold in the F40 shot put, giving athletics its 55th medal in Paralympic competitions, but the first of the most precious metal since the Sydney2000 Games.

Today, at the Stade de France, Sandro Baessa added another medal to Portuguese athletics, winning silver in the 1,500 meters T20 for athletes with intellectual disabilities.

The Paris2024 Games marked the return of Portuguese boccia to the Paralympic podiums after the sport went ‘blank’ in Tokyo2020, something unprecedented since its debut in competitions in New York1984.

Cristina Gonçalves, the veteran of the delegation who has now participated in six Games at Paris2024, achieved her fourth Paralympic medal, but the first in individual competitions, becoming champion in the BC2 tournament.

Diogo Cancela’s bronze medal in the 200 meters styles (SM8) brought Portuguese swimming back to the Paralympic podium, 16 years after the last ascent, which occurred at the Beijing2008 Games.

In cycling, Luís Costa won bronze in the H5 time trial for athletes competing on handbikes, marking the third Portuguese medal in the sport since 1984, in an edition when the Paralympic Games were not yet ‘tied’ to the Olympics.

The Sydney2000 Games, where Portugal had its largest delegation ever with 52 athletes, yielded the most medals, with 15 podium finishes.

In the three previous editions, the number of medals won has been decreasing, with three in London2012, four in Rio2016, and two in Tokyo2020, a trend that has already reversed in the Paris2024 Paralympic Games, where Portugal continues with six medals.
