Portugal witnessed a rare total solar eclipse on Wednesday, drawing thousands of observers to the region of Bragança and prompting a security deployment of roughly 150 GNR military personnel. The phenomenon, which lasted about 26 seconds in its zone of totality, will not occur again in the country until the year 2144.

Security Mobilization and Crowd Control in Bragança

The rare celestial event triggered a security operation in the northern region of Bragança, where approximately 150 military personnel from the GNR were deployed across the territory. The multi-faceted security force included units specializing in territorial policing, traffic control, criminal investigation, and the Special Protection and Rescue Unit. Authorities also bolstered local communications by deploying a SIRESP antenna and coordinating efforts with the Institute for Nature Conservation and Forests (ICNF) alongside municipal leaders.

The objective is only one: to provide security to the thousands of citizens who travel to our region to see the solar eclipse, explained Major Hernâni Martins, speaking about the police presence that began with patrols in Rio de Onor on Tuesday night.

Relocation from Rio de Onor to Bragança Aerodrome

Logistical challenges forced a shift in viewing plans for one of the country’s focal points. Local authorities canceled observations at the Parque Natural de Montesinho, directing crowds instead to the Bragança aerodrome.

The big reason was the risk of fires, stated José Preto, treasurer of the Rio de Onor Parish Council, who noted that the village features very narrow roads and is very small. Despite the diversion, Preto added that looking at the scale that the eclipse took, I believe it was really the best option.

While the main gathering moved to the aerodrome—where the partial occultation reached 99.8%—hundreds of visitors still traveled to Rio de Onor. Residents experienced a radical shift from their normal daily rhythm. I’m going to be here. May they return for the next one in 100 years. We are here to receive again, Preto remarked regarding the wait before the next totality.

Duration, Alignment, and Nationwide Partial Views

For Portugal, Wednesday marked the first time the country witnessed a total solar eclipse since 1912. Within the narrow strip of totality at Montesinho, the peak phenomenon lasted approximately 26 seconds. A total solar eclipse occurs when the Earth, Moon, and Sun align perfectly, causing the Moon to completely hide the solar disk and reveal the characteristic diamond ring effect.

Outside of the brief totality zone, the rest of the country experienced a partial eclipse. Ocultation rates ranged from 92% to 99% across the mainland, and between 74% and 77% in the autonomous regions of the Azores and Madeira. The broader celestial path crossed the Arctic, Greenland, Iceland, and Spain.

Observers across regions noticed environmental shifts during the peak. Where the shadow fell most heavily, ambient light dimmed, air temperatures dropped, background noise subsided, shadows sharpened, and birds stopped singing as daytime briefly mimicked night.

Organized Viewing Sessions Across the Country

The two-hour celestial event began near 18:30 and concluded at 20:30, reaching its maximum at approximately 19:30. Across Portugal, institutions, local governments, and science associations coordinated public viewing events. Science Viva centers, observatories, and municipalities distributed certified protective glasses and set up telescopes equipped with solar filters.
