Two Portuguese coaches will join Hong Myung-bo ahead of the third round of Asian qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North and Central America.

The Korea Football Association (KFA) announced on the 21st that it had appointed Joao Aroso (52) and Ago Maia (40) as foreign coaching staff to assist national soccer team coach Hong Myung-bo (55).

Coach Aroso, who has worked as a coach for the Portuguese national team and Portuguese first division team, will be the head coach and tactical coach, and Coach Maia, who has worked as a coach and analyst for Benfica in Portugal, will be the tactical analysis coach.

Coach Aroso, who started his coaching career at Sporting CP, has been the coach of the Portuguese national team since 2010, helping them advance to the semifinals of the 2012 Euros and the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. After that, he became the coach of the Portugal U-15 national team, the Morocco U-20 national team, and most recently, the technical director of Portugal Famalicao.

He also has a connection with former coach Paulo Bento, who led Korea to the round of 16 in the 2022 Qatar World Cup. Coach Aroso assisted coach Bento for a total of eight years, including four years at Sporting CP and four years with the Portuguese national team.

Coach Maia has coached at Sporting CP and Vitoria Setubal, and has been working as a youth team coach and analyst at Benfica since 2018.

Coach Hong Myung-bo left for Europe last month to interview foreign coaching staff candidates and selected Aroso and Maia.

Coach Hong Myung-bo said, “Coach Aroso is a proven coach who has been in the field for a long time and has read the global soccer trends well,” adding, “I expect him to support the operation of the national team with flexible and proactive tactics that reflect the trends.”

Aroso and Maia will soon enter the country and watch K-League matches starting this weekend to check on the players.

Meanwhile, more time is needed to strengthen the physical coach. The Korea Football Association said, “Negotiations with the physical coach candidate fell through at the final contract stage. We plan to strengthen the physical coach next.”
