The Portuguese Council of Ministers approved this Friday the proposal that reduces IRS rates up to the 8th bracket, announced the prime minister, indicating that the measure amounts to a total tax reduction of 1,539 million euros compared to 2023 .

“A bill was approved that will be sent to the Assembly of the Republic today” with a “decrease in IRS rates up to the 8th income bracket”, said Luís Montenegro at the end of the Council of Ministers.

Only the 9th bracket, the highest, for taxpayers with taxable income equal to or greater than 81,199 thousand euros does not benefit from a reduction.

The Prime Minister also stated that this “decrease estimated by the Government has an overall value that amounts to a reduction of 1,539 million euros compared to 2023”.

Debate in Parliament

The Government’s proposal will now be sent to Parliament, which has already scheduled the debate for April 24th.

Luís Montenegro hopes that if the proposal passes in Parliament and “everything goes smoothly” the reduction could be in force soon “between June and July”.

In the proposal presented, the reduction in IRS rates is lower than those practiced in 2023 and those foreseen in the State Budget for 2024.
