Portuguese media point out the “violent and planned” nature of the attack on migrants in Nador

Newspapers have questioned the “unprecedented” aspect of this assault, since the extreme violence of the attackers and the strategy adopted denote a “high sense of organization and a planned progression.”

“There were 2,000 people prepared, organized and armed, many with bladed weapons,” writes ”Noticiasaominuto”, referring to ”an aggression” carried out by a “hierarchical structure of experienced leaders, with the profile of militiamen trained in conflict zones.”

Highlighting the migratory pressure that Morocco is facing, the author of the article underlines that the “hostile and permanent” attitude of the Algerian neighbor, through which the migrants passed, is not unrelated to these incidents.

The news sites “Sapo” and “Observador” note that “nothing of this magnitude has ever happened in Melilla”, noting that “there seems to be a desire to create problems between Morocco and Spain”.

The media are questioning “the fact that the migrants – mostly Sudanese – have chosen to make a long journey, across the Libyan desert and through neighboring Algeria”, seeing in it “a deliberate laxity on the part of the latter in terms of control of its borders with Morocco”.

CNN Portugal highlights the highly violent strategies used by migrant smuggling networks, highlighting the kingdom’s efforts in migration management.

”The assault on Nador was orchestrated by criminal networks of human trafficking to force passage to access Melilia. In doing so, they knowingly chose to go to violent confrontation with the Moroccan police, who are making a significant effort to control this one-off situation, and throughout the year on all the Moroccan coasts,” said Manuela Niza Ribeiro, a researcher specializing in migration issues, in an interview with the news channel, noting that ”the control of migratory flows and human trafficking or illegal immigration must be a shared responsibility between countries of origin, transit and host countries.”

“It is certain that human trafficking is not fought downstream, but upstream,” she noted, believing that conflicts in the world, particularly in Ukraine, “only serve to fuel this phenomenon.”

Other media outlets have focused on the Kingdom’s action against trafficking networks and its African-oriented migration policy, calling for support for countries of origin and transit, through active solidarity between the North and the South and structural solutions for sustainable development and the encouragement of legal flows.

The latest attempt at a group assault on the metal fence in the province of Nador was marked by the use of unprecedented violence by candidates for irregular immigration against members of the security forces, who acted professionally and in compliance with the laws and regulations.

Armed with stones, batons and sharp objects, these would-be illegal immigrants put up violent resistance to the police, who were mobilized to prevent them from crossing the fence.
