Possible Drowning at Falls Lake Investigated by First Responders in Wake County

Wake County, North Carolina – First responders in Wake County are currently investigating a possible drowning incident at Falls Lake. The tragic incident occurred around 5:20 p.m. on Sunday when a canoe carrying three individuals capsized, according to the Northern Wake Fire Department.

Fortunately, two of the occupants were able to be rescued, but unfortunately, after hours of tireless searching, crews found the body of the third man. As investigations are ongoing, authorities have issued a warning to those planning to engage in water activities to take necessary precautions.

Jonathan Hans, a spokesperson for the Northern Wake Fire Department, emphasized the importance of being prepared and practicing water safety measures. “When people come out here and they’re not prepared, if they’re not strong swimmers, again, if they don’t have personal flotation devices or life jackets, these things can occur,” Hans said.

In their commitment to finding the victim, search efforts will continue for as long as possible throughout the night, and if needed, will resume at first light on Monday. Hans expressed the department’s dedication to the well-being of the victim’s family and friends. “We have a duty for the person and his family and friends to do the best as we can, and we’ll search as long as we can until we make further decisions on that,” he added.

Unfortunately, this was not the only drowning incident to be reported on Sunday in the area. In Chatham County, authorities recovered the body of a man who drowned while boating and swimming, further highlighting the importance of water safety precautions.

As the investigation into the Falls Lake incident continues, it serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers of water activities. Authorities strongly urge individuals to prioritize safety by wearing personal flotation devices and life jackets, obtaining proper training on water activities, and being mindful of one’s swimming ability.

With the hope that the search efforts bring solace to the victim’s loved ones, local authorities and first responders remain committed to preventing such tragedies and ensuring the safety of the community when engaging in recreational water activities.
