Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell has experienced another freezing episode at a press event in Kentucky, raising concerns about his health. This is the second time within a month that McConnell has paused and required assistance from his aides while addressing the public. McConnell’s freezing episodes are believed to be connected to injuries he sustained earlier this year, including a fall resulting in a concussion and fractured rib. Neurosurgeon and medical reporter for CNN, Dr Sanjay Gupta, suggests that McConnell’s falls and previous health issues may be linked to these freezing episodes.
During the recent freezing episode, McConnell’s aides appeared calm and unfazed by the situation, leading experts to suspect that these incidents may be more common than previously thought. If McConnell suffered a traumatic brain injury (TBI) from his fall in March, it could explain the symptoms he’s been exhibiting during press conferences, such as slurred speech and confusion. Symptoms of TBI can also include unusual behavior, agitation, drowsiness, and difficulty recognizing people or places.
Dr Marc Siegel, a medical contributor for Fox News, has also speculated about the potential cause of McConnell’s freezing episodes. He suggests that Parkinson’s disease could be responsible, as it can cause stiffness, uncontrollable movements, and difficulty walking and talking. However, Siegel notes that if McConnell’s aides were concerned about a stroke or seizure, they would have likely sought immediate medical attention, suggesting that they may be aware of an existing diagnosis.
Siegel also mentions that McConnell had polio as a child but dismisses it as the cause of his recent freezes on camera. If McConnell has been diagnosed with Parkinson’s or a similar neurological disease, there is speculation that he may consider retirement, particularly if he is in the later stages of the condition.
