Post: How to see what letters will arrive today on your mobile phone | life & knowledge

Is it worth going to the mailbox today?

Smartphone owners can now see on their mobile phone in the morning which letters will be delivered during the day. The Post & DHL app (for Android and iPhone) in the new version 8 now the so-called letter announcement.

How does this work? Deutsche Post automatically takes photos of the envelopes in its sorting centers and then forwards them to the users of the app. The recordings can be viewed in the app under “Track”. Here you could already call up information about DHL packages on their way to the recipient.

Before you can see your own letters on your cell phone, you have to register with a DHL customer account in the app and activate the free service. In a second step, you enter a confirmation code, which you receive by letter a few days after activation. This ensures that the recipient’s address is correct.

The app shows the programs of the day, as well as the letter announcements of the past 14 days. In order to be able to read the sender better, the recordings can be enlarged in the app.

Why does Swiss Post take pictures of the letters at all? “The photos of the envelopes are created as standard in the fully automated sorting process in our letter centers,” explains a spokesman for the Post to BILD. Text recognition software is used to read the recipient’s zip code, town, street and house number in order to be able to sort the letter. Swiss Post is now also using the photos for the announcement service in its app.

Important to know: Some items are not included in the automatic letter notification. This can happen, for example, if the address is so difficult to read that it cannot be read in automatically. However, certain items such as postal delivery orders from offices or authorities are also not recorded.

Anyone who has an email address with the providers Web.de or GMX.de has been able to use the letter announcement there since summer 2020. If you register for the service by e-mail, you can request not only a photo of the envelope, but also a PDF file with the content of the letter. To do this, however, the sender of the post must send a digital copy.

Then you can save yourself the whole trip to the mailbox – unless it overflows.
