Since the closing ceremony of the Olympic Games, Paris traders have been struggling to find customers. The streets of the capital are empty, Parisians are still on holiday and tourists have left.

Abandoned streets, establishments that have drawn the curtain. Paris has been empty since the end of the 2024 Olympics, with Parisians still on holiday and tourists having left the capital since the events were called off.

In the 17th arrondissement, for example, the number of people who have decided to keep their doors open has decreased. Some mention a turnover divided by three at BFM Paris Île-de-France.

“Sunday evening (August 11, Editor’s note), we had a very nice evening regarding the closing of the Olympic Games. And it is true that our turnover has been divided by two, even by three, since Monday,” says Mariane Dargère, manager and partner of the Village Café.

“I think it is in line with the famous week of August 15, we were expecting it.

“Those who were at the Olympics are gone”

The same story with Martine Dupuis, manager of À Fleurs de Peau. “There is no one there but we knew very well the week of August 15. It happens on Thursdays so on the weekend, there’s not much left,” she explains.

Before adding: “And those who were there at the Olympics, they left. We provide a few hotels and restaurants so that we can work a little more. These are clients that I have had all year and asked we have to provide them, which is why we are still open during this period.”

This lull, which will not disturb the Parisians still present in the capital, will not last forever. August holidaymakers should make their big return to Paris soon, and tourists are likely to return in force for the Paralympics on August 28.

During the Olympic Games, the number of tourists in Paris increased by 14% according to Pierre Rabadan, the deputy mayor of Paris. Hotels recorded an occupancy rate of 85%, compared to the usual 72% during this period.
