A publication on TikTok shares an old statement by the then Navy commander, Almir Garnier Santos, about more transparency for the electoral system, as if it were recent.

The admiral is no longer commander of the Navy, and the statement was made on July 6 last year.

What the post says:

“COMMANDER OF THE NAVY I SPEAK EVERYTHING JUST DON’T INTENDE WHO DOESN’T WANT IT (sic)”, says the text inserted in the video.

In the recording, the then Navy commander reinforces what he said in an interview with the newspaper O Povo, in which he endorsed the defense of then-president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) for a private audit of electronic voting machines.

“I’m Brazilian, I have the right to have an opinion. No one will say that I don’t have the right to have an opinion. And besides, my opinion is: the laws must be respected and must not be twisted, and more than that: we we have to have more transparency, more auditing. The maximum concern will lead to the best results for the Brazilian people”, says the admiral.

Why is it distorted:

The video is true, but the author of the post does not state that it was recorded on July 6, 2022. The then commander of the Navy participated in a hearing at the Federal Chamber (here).

Almir Garnier Santos held the position of commander of the Navy between April 9, 2021 and December 31, 2022during the government of Jair Bolsonaro (here). The current head of the Force is Admiral Marcos Sampaio Olsen (here).

The interview to which Garnier Santos refers was published by the newspaper O Povo, from Ceará, on May 11, 2022 (here). The then commander of the Navy was in Fortaleza to participate in the inauguration of the Almirante Tamandaré statue (here).
