/ Diyala Governorate announced, on Thursday, an increase in potato production for the current season and distinguished varieties, confirming the recovery of local markets with the product.

Diyala Agriculture Media Director, Mohammed Jabbar Al-Mandlawi, told Shafak News Agency that potato production for the current season, despite it not being over yet, has exceeded 10,500 tons after expanding the crop’s cultivation from about 1,000 acres to more than 1,500 acres, while last season’s production amounted to more than 5,500 tons.

He pointed out that the increase and recovery of potato production has had a positive impact on local markets after the production of distinguished varieties of the crop, including (Lady Rosetta), which is in demand by food product production companies such as chips and other food flakes, noting that production companies have contracted with potato farms to purchase the crop.

He added that the second type of potato (Arizona) is used for the family table, stressing the high demand for it in local markets.

Al-Mandlawi explained that potato production areas were concentrated in the fertile areas and lands between Al-Khalis District and Al-Azim District due to the abundance of water and the elements of successful cultivation, in addition to the use of modern irrigation techniques (drip irrigation).
