Power Board prepares to face summer | Power Board prepares to tackle summer

CHENNAI: The Electricity Board has ordered the engineers to carry out power generation without any repairs in their own power stations to meet the summer power demand.

Five thermal power plants of 4,320 MW capacity for Tamil Nadu Electricity Board; 47 hydroelectric plants with a capacity of 2,321 MW; There are four gas power plants with a capacity of 516 MW.

The electricity available from these is not enough to meet the daily power requirement. Thus, contracts are signed with the central government and private companies and electricity is purchased.

Due to repairs in thermal power plants, ‘boiler tube puncture’, shortage of water in hydro power plants, shortage of natural gas in gas power plants, power production is affected.

Due to this, there is a need to buy electricity in the immediate electricity market. In that market, the price of 1 unit is very high.

Although the summer season will start in March, the heat will be severe in this month itself. Thus, the use of ‘AC’ devices will increase.

The daily average power demand of 15,000 megawatts will exceed 18,000 megawatts. To fulfill it, the Electricity Board is taking various measures.

Accordingly, at the head office of the Chennai Electricity Board, its Chairman Rajesh Lakhani conducted an inspection yesterday with the Chief Engineers of the respective divisions regarding the operation of thermal, hydro and gas power plants.

Power Generation Division Director Rajendran and others participated in it.

Coal availability, water availability in dams, natural gas supply were studied.

In this regard, an official of the Electricity Board said, ‘In order to overcome the summer electricity demand and avoid buying electricity in the immediate electricity market, the engineers have been ordered to produce electricity at full capacity without any repairs in their own power plants.’
