Powerball jackpot jumps to $810M for New Year’s drawing

by time news

The Powerball jackpot has reached an estimated $810 million after no winners were announced in the final drawing of 2023, lottery officials revealed. This hefty prize, offering an estimated cash value of $408.9 million, will be up for grabs in the next drawing on Jan. 1, 2024.

The pot is now ranked as the fifth-largest Powerball jackpot and the 10th-largest U.S. lottery jackpot in history, according to the Multi-State Lottery Association. However, the odds of winning it are still incredibly slim, at about 1 in 292.2 million.

“We’re excited to offer our players a jackpot of this magnitude to kick off the New Year,” said Drew Svitko, Powerball Product Group Chair and Pennsylvania Lottery Executive Director, adding that players are reminded to play responsibly, especially during the holiday season.

The last Powerball jackpot was won on Oct. 11 in California, with the ticket holder taking home a grand prize of $1.765 billion. Since then, there have been 34 consecutive drawings without winners.

Saturday night’s numbers were: white balls 10, 11, 26, 27, 34 and red Powerball 7, with a Power Play multiplier of 4X.

If a player nabs the winnings, they can accept the annuitized prize worth an estimated $810 million or take the lump sum payment estimated at $408.9 million, both of which will have taxes deducted. With the annuity option, players will receive one immediate payment followed by 29 annual payments that increase by 5% each year, according to lottery officials.

Lottery enthusiasts are eagerly anticipating the next drawing, with the hopes of becoming the lucky winner of the mammoth jackpot.
