Cheng Saephan, an immigrant from Laos who has battled cancer for eight years, was the winner of one of the Powerball jackpots, valued at $1.3 billion.

Saephan, who received his last chemotherapy treatment just last week, revealed at a press conference hosted by the Oregon Lottery that he would share the prize with his wife Duanpen and a friend, Laiza Chao, who had invested with them in the purchase of the winning ticket.

“I will be able to support my family and my health”expressed Saephan with emotion, who also shared his reflection on the sudden stroke of fortune and his health situation: “How am I going to have time to spend all this money? How long will I live?”.

Apparently, the money from this huge Powerball would provide not only financial security, but also the ability to seek the best medical treatments available.

It is worth noting that Saephan’s life journey from Laos, through Thailand, until his arrival in the United States in 1994, speaks of a story of survival and struggle.

The immigrant revealed that, before the draw, he made an act of faith: he wrote the numbers of the game on a sheet of paper and kept it under his pillow, praying for a better future for him and his family. This simple but touching gesture apparently worked out in the best possible way for him.

On the other hand, it should be noted that the $1.3 billion jackpot ranks as the fourth largest in Powerball history and the eighth largest in the United States, marking a historic moment for both the Oregon Lottery and Saephan.

This victory is a reminder that sometimes the most unlikely dreams become reality, changing people’s lives when they least expect it.
