Jakarta:

Indonesia is prone to frequent earthquakes and volcanic eruptions due to its location on the “Ring of Fire”, an arc of volcanoes and equatorial lines in the Pacific basin.

In this case, a powerful earthquake occurred under the sea in the western part of Indonesia this morning. It registered a magnitude of 6.0.

The US Geological Survey said the quake was centered at a depth of 48km, 48km southeast of Sing, a coastal district in Aceh province.

No tsunami warning has been issued by Indonesia’s Meteorological, Climatic and Geophysical Center.

No information about property damage or loss of life has been released.

At least 331 people were killed in the 5.6-magnitude earthquake in Siangjur, West Java on November 21.
