The first three already led the classification of municipalities with the lowest per capita income in 2020, but the last two did not appear among the top five in the previous statistics.

By geographical location, the 2021 data published by the INE reveals that 84.9% of the municipalities of the Basque Country are among the 25% of those with the highest income in Spainabove 14,443 euros, followed by those of Navarra, with 66.5%.

At the other extreme is Murcia, where 86.7% of its municipalities are among the 25% with the lowest income, below 10,987 euros, followed by Andalusia, with 83.7%.

According to the INE, the provincial capitals with a higher percentage of census sections with the highest average annual net income per inhabitant, above 18,152 euros, are led by San Sebastián (54.9%), Madrid (39.1%) and Barcelona (35.7%). On the contrary, Pontevedra (1.6%), Zamora (2%) and Huelva (2.8%) present the lowest percentages of very wealthy census tracts.

For their part, the provincial capitals that have the highest percentage of sections with the lowest average annual net income per inhabitant, below the first income decile (9,295 euros), are Melilla (29.5%), Ceuta (26.8 %) and Alicante (24%).

Statistics highlight that nine provincial capitals do not have any census section at the low end of average income per inhabitanttwo less than in 2020.

Overall, 59.5% of the population in the Basque Country lives in high-income census sections, while in the case of Extremadura this percentage is only 7.4%. On the contrary, 60.2% of the population in Extremadura lives in low-income census sections. In the Basque Country this percentage is 1.4%.

By province, Guipúzcoa tops the list of annual income, with 16,887 euros of average annual net income per inhabitant in 2021. It is followed by Vizcaya, with 16,192 euros; Madrid (16,146 euros); Álava (15,539 euros) and Barcelona (15,297 euros).

The provinces with the lowest annual income per capita are Almería (10,103 euros of net income); Badajoz (10,549); Huelva (10,609 euros); Jaén (10,689 euros) and Cádiz (10,712).
