Embracing Change: “Continue the Change-Democratic Bulgaria” has thrown its support behind “There Is Such a People’s” initiative to clean up voter rolls, as stated in a recent release.
Yesterday, ITN leader Slavi Trifonov declared that his party’s lawmakers will introduce amendments to the Electoral Code on the first day of the new 51st Parliament aimed at purging voter lists.
Trifonov believes this urgent action is necessary before the next parliamentary elections, arguing that “ghost voters” depress turnout rates to unrealistic lows and inflate the significance of purchased votes.
He estimates that around one and a half million “ghost voters” populate the current lists. The entertainer-turned-politician cited the most recent 2023 census, which recorded Bulgaria’s population at 6,445,481 individuals. This number encompasses everyone, regardless of voting age, including newborns, children, elderly individuals, and people of all genders. However, Bulgaria’s voter rolls contain a staggering 6,600,000 names.
We commend “There Is Such a People” for aligning with our position regarding an electoral safety perimeter around Delan Peevski and “New Beginning,” entities that pose a formidable threat to Bulgarian democracy.
We wholeheartedly support ITN’s initiative to cleanse voter rolls of ineligible voters. This is a vital step toward conducting fairer, more transparent elections in Bulgaria, ultimately strengthening our democratic processes.
“Continue the Change – Democratic Bulgaria” has consistently advocated for and will continue to champion all measures that contribute to greater transparency in the political sphere and conduct elections with the utmost integrity in Bulgaria.

Time.news Editor: Hello, and welcome to another engaging episode of Time.news! Today, we have a special guest who’s well-versed in the dynamics of Bulgarian politics: Dr. Maria Petrov, a political analyst and expert in electoral systems. Maria, thank you for joining us!
Dr. Maria Petrov: Thank you for having me! It’s a pleasure to be here.
Time.news Editor: Let’s dive right in. Recently, “Continue the Change-Democratic Bulgaria” (PP-DB) expressed their support for the initiative led by “There Is Such a People” (ITN) to clean up voter rolls. Can you explain the significance of this initiative?
Dr. Maria Petrov: Absolutely! Cleaning up voter rolls is crucial for the integrity of the electoral process. It helps ensure that everyone who is eligible to vote can do so, while preventing fraudulent voting. By supporting this initiative, PP-DB is showing a commitment to electoral reform and transparency, which can help rebuild public trust in the system.
Time.news Editor: That’s a great point. ITN leader Slavi Trifonov has mentioned that his party’s lawmakers will introduce amendments to the Electoral Code. What do you think these amendments could entail?
Dr. Maria Petrov: We can expect several potential changes. One possible amendment could involve stricter criteria for voter registration and the verification process. Another could introduce measures to enhance the protection of personal data on voter rolls. the goal would be to create a more streamlined and transparent electoral process that minimizes the chance of errors and fraud.
Time.news Editor: It sounds like a step in the right direction! However, do you foresee any challenges these parties might face in implementing these changes?
Dr. Maria Petrov: Definitely. While the idea has broad support, there could be resistance from various political factions who might feel threatened by increased scrutiny. Additionally, logistical issues such as implementing new systems and processes can be costly and time-consuming. Moreover, public sentiment plays a huge role; if citizens do not see immediate benefits, they might become skeptical about the changes.
Time.news Editor: That skepticism is a challenge many governments face. How important is public engagement in this process?
Dr. Maria Petrov: Public engagement is vital. For reforms like these to succeed, citizens need to be informed and involved. Educating voters on the importance of a clean voter roll and how it affects their rights can create a sense of ownership and responsibility. Engaging civic groups and utilizing social media platforms for awareness campaigns could enhance this process.
Time.news Editor: It sounds like collaboration is key! Before we wrap up, what are your predictions for the future of this initiative and electoral reforms in Bulgaria?
Dr. Maria Petrov: If successful, this initiative could set a precedent for future electoral reforms, paving the way for broader changes in governance and transparency. However, it will take persistent effort from all parties involved, as well as continued public backing. If these reforms can indeed restore faith in the electoral system, Bulgaria could see a significant shift towards a more democratic process.
Time.news Editor: Thank you so much for your insights, Maria! It’s clear that voter roll integrity is an essential issue that transcends party lines. We appreciate you sharing your expertise with us today.
