Indonesia Pushes for US Trade Deal Completion by Year’s End
Indonesia is determined to finalize a comprehensive trade agreement with the United States before the close of the year, signaling a renewed push to solidify economic ties between the two nations. The move comes as both countries face increasing pressure to resolve outstanding issues while prioritizing shared economic objectives.
A high-level delegation from Jakarta is scheduled to travel to Washington, D.C. next week to continue negotiations, building on the progress made when leaders initially reached an agreement on July 22. Coordinating Economy Minister Airlangga Hartarto announced the upcoming trip during remarks at the Indonesian Listed Companies Association’s (AEI) anniversary event on Friday.
“We will send a team to Washington next week, and I will go as well,” Hartarto stated. “Our office and the technical teams have been coordinating closely to ensure a productive dialogue.” Hartarto, who also spearheads Indonesia’s negotiation team, added that the decision to dispatch the delegation followed discussions with US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer on Thursday evening and a subsequent briefing of President Prabowo Subianto on Friday morning.
In July, both nations released a joint statement outlining a framework for a trade agreement. Key components of the proposed deal include Indonesia’s commitment to eliminate import tariffs on 99 percent of US goods and dismantle non-tariff barriers impacting American firms. The agreement also encompasses plans for Indonesia to purchase approximately $19 billion worth of US products.
This ambitious trade initiative is further bolstered by a significant investment commitment from Indonesia. Manufacturing firm Indorama is poised to invest $2 billion in a blue ammonia project located in the US state of Louisiana, directly linked to the broader trade agreement.
The push for a finalized deal follows reports of potential friction in the negotiations. However, officials maintain that the overall trajectory remains positive. This renewed focus underscores the strategic importance of the US market for Indonesia and the potential benefits of a strengthened economic partnership.

The successful completion of this trade deal would represent a major win for both countries, fostering increased trade, investment, and economic growth. It also signals a commitment to strengthening bilateral relations in a dynamic global landscape.
