Prague: Hospital staff performed an abortion on a perfectly healthy woman who came for a routine check-up in the fourth month of her pregnancy. The shocking incident took place on March 25 at the Bulovka University Hospital in Prague, the capital of the Czech Republic. The initial explanation given by the hospital authorities was that the mishap occurred due to a communication error between the hospital staff and the woman as both parties did not know the language.

Gynecologist and vice president of the Czech Medical Chamber, Jan Prada, responded that if the young woman spoke or knew Czech, she would probably have had a clue of what she was about to face. The chairman of the Czech Society for Quality in Health Care, David Marks, said that the causes of this unfortunate incident should be found and measures should be taken to prevent such incidents from happening again. Bulovka Hospital spokeswoman Eva Stolejda Libigerova said that the investigation so far revealed that the hospital staff had operated on another young woman instead of the patient who had to undergo surgery due to a serious fall. The employees responsible for the incident have been suspended. The hospital authorities also stated that further action will be taken against the employees.

The fact that none of the medical team including nurses, doctors including gynecologist and anesthetist could recognize the change in the patient shows the seriousness of the lapse. The abortion of the young woman was done through curettage. This is a surgical procedure in which a spoon-like instrument is used to remove abnormal tumors or other abnormalities from inside the uterus. Anesthesia is also required for this. The woman lost her unborn child due to an operation scheduled for another patient.
