Prague Police Identify Runner Who Dove Into Vltava River After SUV Crash

A police SUV crashed off the Hlávka Bridge and into the Vltava River in Prague on October 10, 2026, after entering a skid on tram tracks. A passing runner jumped into the freezing water to help the two officers inside, leading to a police search that successfully identified the rescuer days later.

The incident unfolded shortly before 8 a.m. on a Saturday morning in the Czech capital. A police Kodiaq vehicle belonging to the emergency motor vehicle unit was traveling with its emergency lights activated toward the center of Prague when the driver lost control on the tram rails running across the Hlávka Bridge, according to reporting from Týdeník Policie.

Video footage of the sequence showed the SUV braking and attempting to correct a rear-wheel slide before the vehicle veered sharply across traffic, punched through the bridge railing, and plunged out of sight into the river below.

Inside the submerged cruiser were a male officer and a female officer, both aged between 25 and 30. Despite the violence of the crash and the immediate flooding of the cabin, the officers managed to survive the drop, though both suffered from hypothermia by the time emergency crews reached them.

Runner Dives Into Cold River To Save Officers

While drivers and bystanders on the bridge watched the unfolding disaster, an unidentified man running along the route made a split-second decision. Rather than pull out a phone to record the wreckage, the passerby scaled the barrier and dove straight into the cold Vltava River to assist the trapped crew. Eyewitness accounts and emergency service debriefs confirmed that the civilian reached the sinking vehicle, helped keep the officers afloat, and assisted in getting them out of immediate danger before climbing back onto the bank and quietly leaving the scene.

Emergency medical dispatchers deployed three rapid-response ambulance crews, an inspection supervisor, and a physician-led vehicle to the bridge. The official emergency rescue service team confirmed that three individuals in total—the two officers and the runner—were evaluated for cold exposure before being transferred to a hospital for observation.

Crews Extract Wreckage From The River

As medical personnel treated the hypothermic victims on shore, a multi-agency recovery operation commenced in the river. Specialized river units and fire department divers from Prague stations worked alongside police marine units to locate the wreckage. Divers secured rigging and straps around the submerged police SUV, allowing a heavy mobile crane to haul the wrecked cruiser back up onto the bridge deck.

The vehicle sustained damage to its front end, and its airbags deployed upon impact.

Automotive analysts reviewing the available video noted that the SUV’s specialized heavy-duty front push bumper and modified electronic stability control—configured to assist officers during tactical intervention maneuvers—may have complicated recovery from the initial rear-wheel slide on the slick metal tram rails.

Police Track Down The Missing Rescuer

Because the runner had departed the bridge without leaving his name or contact details, Prague police launched a public appeal to track him down. Officials emphasized that law enforcement agencies are usually the ones rendering assistance, making the sudden reversal of roles all the more striking.

Jan Rybanský told Týdeník Policie that “we usually report that we have helped someone. Today, however, it is the other way around. We express our heartfelt thanks to the unknown Mr. Runner, who this morning helped our Prague colleagues after they ended up beneath the surface of the Vltava along with their vehicle as a result of a traffic accident.”

The search concluded successfully when investigators successfully identified the Czech citizen after one of the officers connected through a personal acquaintance who knew the runner’s partner. Police confirmed they are now in direct communication with the man, and departmental leadership intends to present a formal expression of gratitude in the coming days.

Meanwhile, internal inspection officers and traffic crash investigators continue to examine the precise sequence of events leading up to the loss of control, pending formal interviews with the recovering members of the patrol unit.
