Marvelous Nakamba is the regular face on the side bench of Astonville, coached by Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard. The Zimbabwean side was sidelined with a chronic injury. Nakamba, who has a knack for snatching the ball from opponents’ feet, had no fights on the field last season. But on the side bench, Nakamba was waging a great struggle for the community and for the future generations of his country. Zimbabwe is an African country where child marriage is still very much in vogue. Nakamba’s life goal is to stop that evil. The 28-year-old has started the Marvelous Nakamba Foundation in his name.
The primary function of the Foundation is to ensure the upliftment of children through sports. A large multipurpose sports complex will be built at Mahashula in Bulawayo. The Marvel Nakamba Foundation announced on Twitter that it had begun its operations. June 16 is Children’s Day in Africa. On the same day, Nakamba announced that UNICEF was committed to working with Zimbabwe.
My childhood was spent in backward areas like Dinde and Wange. There were all sorts of situations to get around and get lost. I will be there to pave the way for a society that does not recognize right and wrong – Nakamba’s words. Nakamba, who completed his fourth season in Astonville, is aiming for a grand comeback in the new season after recovering from injury. He also missed the African Nations Cup due to injury.
