Bangkok Implements Surveillance and Preventive Measures Against Influenza and Dengue Fever

Bangkok, Thailand – In an effort to protect its citizens from the spread of influenza and dengue fever, Bangkok has implemented a comprehensive surveillance system and proactive measures. Mrs. Lertlak Leelasawang, Director of the Medical Office (MDP), emphasized the importance of preparedness in controlling the spread of communicable diseases and various health hazards.

Hospitals under the jurisdiction of Bangkok have been directed to monitor and control the spread of diseases, provide timely diagnosis, and administer appropriate treatment according to guidelines. They have also been instructed to manage drug reserves to ensure sufficient supply for patient treatment. Vaccines for preventing and controlling diseases, including measles and influenza, as well as acute diarrhea caused by viruses, are being made available to at-risk patients.

To further promote health awareness, the community health working group of affiliated hospitals is actively providing proactive services. This includes organizing activities and exhibitions to disseminate knowledge to both individuals receiving services and the surrounding community. The aim is to raise awareness about the importance of personal health care and protection.

Regarding the provision of influenza vaccine services, Bangkok has prepared its medical facilities to ensure a smooth vaccination process. Guidelines have been shared with affiliated hospitals to provide free influenza vaccinations to citizens with universal health coverage. Seven risk groups, including pregnant women, children aged 6 months to 2 years, people with chronic diseases, elderly individuals aged 65 and above, individuals with thalassemia and impaired immune systems, those classified as obese, and mentally disabled individuals, are eligible to receive the vaccine.

Citizens can check their eligibility and reserve vaccination rights in advance through the “Health bag” application “Pao Tang.” For those who find it inconvenient to book through the app, they can call the NHSO hotline to reserve an appointment for influenza vaccination. However, appointment availability depends on each service unit’s conditions. Citizens are advised to contact the service unit directly if unable to make an appointment.

In order to combat diseases carried by Aedes mosquitoes, such as Zika virus infection, dengue fever, and chikungunya, the Office of the Basic Education Commission has conducted preliminary screenings and established a surveillance and control system. This system aims to detect and diagnose diseases quickly to reduce the severity of illness and prevent fatalities. Guidelines and measures for preventing and controlling dengue fever have also been introduced, including eliminating mosquito breeding grounds within hospitals and their surrounding communities.

The community health work group has been assigned to raise awareness about diseases caused by Aedes mosquitoes, precautions to protect against mosquito bites, and methods to survey and eliminate mosquito breeding grounds. Additionally, fogging services are being provided in the areas surrounding hospitals in coordination with the local area office.

The public is encouraged to follow the “5 P measures” to prevent infectious diseases carried by Aedes mosquitoes, which include tightly closing container lids, releasing fish to eat mosquito larvae, changing water in open containers, improving the environment to prevent mosquito breeding, and practicing these measures consistently every day.

To stay protected from mosquito bites, individuals are advised to use spray cans, mosquito repellent lotion, and seek medical attention if important symptoms arise. High-risk groups, such as the elderly, young children, pregnant women, and individuals with chronic diseases like obesity, should avoid self-medication. Instead, they should consult a doctor via Telemedicine through the “Doctor Bangkok” application or by contacting the health hotline, Bangkok News Agency, at 1646.

Bangkok is committed to safeguarding the health and well-being of its residents by implementing these surveillance and preventive measures. Through proactive efforts and public cooperation, the spread of infectious diseases can be effectively controlled and minimized.]
