Preparations and Risks for Heavy Downpours in Central Sweden

by time news

Heavy downpours are expected in central Sweden towards Saturday evening and night. Following the recent floods and high water flows in these areas, the Swedish Emergency Services (RiS) is prepared for the potential risks.

Niklas Bruhn, a representative from RiS, mentioned that the current conditions pose even higher risks due to the amount of water accumulated over a long period. He stated that all water systems are extremely stressed, increasing the likelihood of landslides, undermining, and sinkholes.

RiS covers Gävle, Dalarna, and Hälsingland. They have made preparations with materials such as barriers that can be quickly set up, as well as established contacts between the municipalities.

When asked if there is concern, Niklas Bruhn reassured that they are prepared and continue to make necessary preparations.

According to the Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute (SMHI), there are currently nine orange alerts. These include flooding and high flows in Delångersån, flood in Lake Orsa and Siljan, flood in Testeboån, flooding in Färnebofjärden and Dalälven upstream towards Näs bruk, flood in Hjälmaren-Eskilstunaån, high flows in Hamrångeån and Lower Österdalälven.

An orange warning from SMHI means that the weather conditions may cause danger to the public, serious property and environmental damage, and disruption of community functions. Individuals or groups that are particularly sensitive can be highly affected.
