Preparations for local council elections begin

Colombo (News 1st) Lawyer Nimal Punchihewa, chairman of the National Elections Commission, said preparations for the local government elections had begun.

He made the remarks while addressing a meeting of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Elections, electoral structure and amendments to be made to the rules.

He said the Election Commission was currently preparing to hold elections for the Pradeshiya Sabha, City Council and Municipal Councils, with the term of the local bodies ending on March 20, 2022.

Lawyer Nimal Punchihewa, chairman of the National Elections Commission, said it was necessary to be ready about four months before the upcoming local government elections.

In this regard, he said that if the local body elections are to be held under the current legal system without any changes, the date for the elections will be announced in January 2022.

The next Parliamentary Select Committee meeting will be held on the 20th, according to the Parliamentary Media Unit.
