In a brief video message posted on Facebook, Ukrainian President Selensky said Russia was conducting a special military operation in the Donbass region and carrying out attacks on its military infrastructure and border guards.
“This morning, Russia launched a new military operation against our government,” President Selensky said in a statement issued on the Presidential Palace website.
This is a completely baseless, cynical invasion, “said President Selensky.
“We, the citizens of Ukraine, have been determining our future since 1991,” he said, referring to the fall of the Soviet Union.
“But now the decision is not only about the future of our country, but also about the future of how Europe is going to live,” he said.
Earlier, a nationwide 30-day state of emergency was declared. Introducing a state of emergency empowers officers to choose what they want to implement. These include restrictions on traffic, additional security for critical infrastructure and a ban on strikes. The state of emergency has been in effect since 2014 and applies to all Ukraine except the Donetsk and Luhansk regions.
Martial law imposes strict restrictions, including restrictions on meetings, movements and political parties.
