President Adama Barrow concluded a visit to the Gabonese Republic on August 18, 2026, where he served as Special Guest of Honour for the country’s 66th independence anniversary celebrations. Accompanied by First Lady Madam Fatoumatta Bah-Barrow, the Gambian leader inspected military displays and met with hundreds of Gambians living in Gabon.
Military Might and Independence Celebrations
The centerpiece of the presidential visit centered on the Gabonese Republic’s 66th Independence Anniversary celebrations. President Adama Barrow participated as the Special Guest of Honour alongside First Lady Madam Fatoumatta Bah-Barrow, taking in nearly five hours of military parades.
The anniversary showcased the host nation’s defense apparatus, with military academy students and security professionals demonstrating operational uniforms, medical equipment, and engineering gear. With approximately 25 percent of Gabon’s national budget allocated to defense, the parade served as a public display of military capabilities.
Following the parade proceedings, a state cocktail reception welcomed dignitaries. During this itinerary, President Barrow received an inspirational tour of the newly developed city of Belle Roi
, which was constructed on land reclaimed from the sea.
Engaging the Gambian Diaspora in Gabon
Later on Monday evening, the presidential delegation turned its focus toward the local community. President Barrow and the First Lady met with more than five hundred Gambians living in Gabon at the time of the visit.
The attendees expressed enthusiasm over meeting the head of state and voiced support for the developments shaping the country. In response to community concerns regarding consular services, the President addressed criticism directed at his government’s efforts to provide identity documentation to citizens abroad.
He pledged that his administration would facilitate the process to ensure proper documentation. Emphasizing the value of overseas citizens, President Barrow stated in a direct address: Gambians living in other African countries are part of the Diaspora,
as reported by the official State House dispatch.
Diplomatic Delegation and Departure
The official entourage accompanying the Gambian leader included senior diplomatic and administrative figures. Foreign Minister Honourable Sering Modou Njie and Chief of Staff Alieu Loum traveled with the President throughout the diplomatic mission.
On Tuesday morning, President Oligui Nguema and First Lady Zita Nyangui Oligui Nguema bade farewell to the visiting delegation. President Barrow and his team departed from Leone Mba Airport to return to Banjul, officially concluding the diplomatic engagement.
