Major Disaster Declared in Illinois: Federal Assistance Available for Severe Storm and Flood Recovery Efforts

Today, President Joseph R. Biden, Jr. announced a major disaster declaration for the State of Illinois, authorizing Federal assistance to support state and local recovery efforts following severe storms and flooding that occurred from June 29 to July 2, 2023.

The declaration specifically makes Federal funding available to affected individuals in Cook County. This assistance can include grants for temporary housing and home repairs, low-cost loans to cover uninsured property losses, and various other programs aimed at helping individuals and business owners recover from the devastating impact of the disaster.

In addition to individual assistance, Federal funding will also be provided on a cost-sharing basis for hazard mitigation measures in Cook County. These measures are crucial in minimizing future risks and ensuring the community’s resilience against similar disasters.

To oversee the Federal recovery operations in the affected areas, Andrew D. Friend of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has been appointed as the coordinator. Friend will work closely with state and local officials to ensure effective and efficient distribution of resources.

While damage assessments are still ongoing in other areas, it is expected that additional counties and forms of assistance will be designated once the assessments are complete. This shows the government’s commitment to providing comprehensive support to all communities affected by the severe storms and flooding.

Residents and business owners who have suffered losses in the designated areas can begin applying for assistance through multiple channels. They can visit www.DisasterAssistance.gov, call 800-621-FEMA (3362), or utilize the FEMA App. Additionally, those using relay services can provide the number for their respective service to FEMA for streamlined communication.

The Federal declaration of a major disaster in Illinois and the subsequent availability of Federal assistance marks a significant step towards rebuilding and recovery. The government’s support will undoubtedly alleviate some of the burdens faced by individuals and businesses, providing them with the resources needed to recover and rebuild their lives.
