Clear and forceful: “Lower food prices or there will be problems,” was the sentence that the President of the Republic, Nayib Bukele, made to importers, wholesalers, distributors and marketers.

“The free market is a system in which prices for goods and services are regulated by supply and demand, and competition drives quality improvements and price reductions. But activities such as cartel formation, tax evasion, bribery and smuggling are crimes that must be punished, as they distort the functioning of the market. To all importers, wholesalers, distributors and traders: Lower food prices or there will be problems,” the president said on national television last Friday.

Following President Bukele’s blunt message, price reductions in various supermarkets have gone viral.

It is worth noting that the Government has made available to Salvadorans the “weekend markets” where they can find the fairest prices to alleviate the economy of Salvadorans. The markets have been located in key points in all the municipalities of the country.
