President Joe Biden welcomed Italy’s far-right Premier Giorgia Meloni to the White House on Thursday, expressing gratitude for Italy’s support of Ukraine. Biden had initially viewed Meloni’s rise to power with trepidation due to her far-right ideology. However, her commitment to Ukraine and possible withdrawal from Italy’s participation in China’s Belt and Road Initiative eased the Biden administration’s concerns. Italy will assume the presidency of the Group of Seven next year, further solidifying the importance of their relationship.
During their meeting in the Oval Office, Biden commended Italy and Meloni for their strong support in defending against Russian aggression in Ukraine. He thanked the Italian people for their backing and acknowledged the difference it makes. Meloni, on her first visit as premier, emphasized the importance of strong relations between the U.S. and Italy, regardless of political differences. She stated that her alignment with the Republican Party does not hinder her relationship with President Biden.
The leaders discussed various issues, including Ukraine, China, and the migration crisis in Europe. They also addressed the alarming number of migrants who have lost their lives while attempting to cross the Mediterranean. The Biden administration had previously regarded Meloni’s predecessor, Mario Draghi, as a strong ally. However, they expressed concerns about the rise of hard-right populism in Italy and worldwide after Meloni’s victory. Biden warned against complacency in dealing with such ideologies.
Meloni made history as Italy’s first far-right leader since World War II after her party, Brothers of Italy, emerged as the largest vote-getter in the September 2022 elections. Despite initial skepticism, the White House highlighted Italy’s competence as a NATO ally and their unwavering support of Ukraine.
Before meeting with Biden, Meloni visited Capitol Hill to meet with House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, and other lawmakers. She emphasized the importance of unity in helping Ukraine protect its sovereignty. Meloni’s party, though named after Italy’s national anthem, traces back to fascism’s embrace, but she has explicitly stated that she does not uphold the cult of fascism in her autobiography.
Meloni has faced criticisms for her government’s stance on same-sex couples and limited recognition of parental rights. Additionally, she initially called for a naval blockade of northern Africa to combat smugglers but later abandoned the idea. Despite these controversies, Meloni has been an ardent supporter of Ukraine’s sovereignty and a vocal advocate for a stronger NATO and strong U.S.-Italian relations.
Italy’s ties with China through the Belt and Road Initiative have also been a point of contention. While Italy became the first G7 nation to join the initiative in 2019, Meloni has expressed skepticism and emphasized the need for a decision to either renew or abandon the accord by early next year.
