President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva spoke on the phone on the afternoon of this Thursday, August 22, with former U.S. President Bill Clinton. Lula was joined on the call by special advisor Celso Amorim and the Secretary-General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Maria Laura da Rocha.
During the conversation, which lasted about 35 minutes, former President Clinton invited President Lula to participate in an event organized by the Clinton Foundation on Climate Change (September 23-24), on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York. Clinton referred to the advances made by Brazil in combating deforestation and promoting energy transition.
President Lula reiterated the government’s commitment to energy transition and forest protection, stating that he intends to present ambitious results for COP 29, in Baku (Azerbaijan), and COP 30, in Belém.
Lula also congratulated the former president on his speech yesterday at the Democratic Party convention, highlighting the importance of strengthening democracy in the face of the rise of extremism in the world.
