As indicated by the Resident Representative of the World Bank in Burundi, Ms. Hawa Cissé Wagué, this Merankabandi II project is the result of the pilot project executed from 2017-2022 in 4 provinces of the country namely Gitega, Ruyigi, Karusi and Kirundo which had reached 56 thousand households allowing them to improve living conditions thanks to a monetary transfer of 36 thousand per month per household.
“This $150 million project (i.e. 450 billion Bu Francs) aligns both with the vision of the Government of Burundi to strengthen the resilience of communities and with the wish of His Excellency the President of the Republic to do everything to that every mouth has something to eat and every pocket has money,” Ms. Cissé insisted before adding that this new project, started in 2022 and which will last 5 years, has already provided support to 50 thousand households in the localities most affected by food insecurity in the provinces of Kirundo, Ngozi, Bubanza, Cibitoke, Rumonge.
“I am delighted that I have a reliable partner who goes with us,” declared the Burundian Number One, welcoming in general the support of the World Bank in Burundi and particularly this project which contributes to the achievement of The Vision of Burundi emerges in 2040 and developed in 2060.
Reiterating the commitment of the government of Burundi to promote the development of the population through such projects in particular PAEEJ, BIJE, etc., the President of the Republic recommended that beneficiaries consider this financial support as capital granted to them with a view to ‘ undertake income-generating projects.
“This sum of money that you benefit from, consider it as manna. Use it wisely, we will evaluate it at the end of the project to see what you have become,” insisted the Head of State who did not fail to remind the Burundians not to count on external aid. but rather to work assiduously to enrich oneself while ensuring the maintenance of peace and security of the country.
His Excellency Evariste Ndayishimiye also instructed the governors and managers of the project in the communes and provinces of Burundi to ensure its sustainability through rigorous monitoring with the beneficiaries so that the capital used is profitable and multiplied by 3 at the end of the project.
Note that on this occasion of the launch of the MERANKABANDI Phase Two Project, the President of the Republic granted 1 Million Bu Francs to each of the 4 cultural animation groups present with the aim of helping them launch development projects.
