President Ndayishimiye returns from a mission to Tanzania where he took part in the 23rd Summit of Heads of State of the EAC

Speaking to the press upon his arrival at the Melchior Ndadaye international airport, His Excellency Evariste indicated that on the sidelines of the said summit of Heads of State, a High Level Forum of the EAC was also held on climate change and food security. He indicates that the forum was an opportunity for each EAC country to share experiences, in order to agree on common climate resilience strategies within the region.

The Head of State indicates, in fact, that the main objective of this forum was to adopt a common position of the EAC countries to face climate change, a position which will be presented at COP-28 , one of the international climate summits planned for Dubai before the end of this year.

Regarding the work of the 23rd ordinary summit of Heads of State and Government of the East African community, His Excellency Evariste Ndayishimiye revealed that the Federal Republic of Somalia has been admitted to be one of the member countries of this community.

He indicates that the summit also examined the progress report on sustainable financing of the community and that the Heads of State agreed on a rate of 65% (equal contribution) and 35% (assessed contribution), as a formula financing.

The summit was also an opportunity for the handover of witnesses to the presidency of the Summit of Heads of State and Government of the EAC between the Burundian Head of State His Excellency Evariste Ndayishimiye and his South Sudanese Counterpart His Excellency Salva Kiir.

On this same subject, the outgoing President of the summit of Heads of State and Government of the EAC His Excellency Evariste Ndayishimiye draws up a largely positive assessment of the achievements in several areas, notably in intra-regional trade, industry, the field social, political and security, etc.

Regarding this last subject, he indicates that he is delighted with the step already taken in strengthening peace and security in the entire region in general. In making the assessment on peace in the East of the DRC, as the mandate of the EAC Forces deployed there ends in December this year, His Excellency Evariste Ndayishimiye indicated that the Heads of State recommended for the Chiefs of Forces of EAC and SADC member countries to meet with a view to making recommendations on the way forward.

Before closing, the Burundian President took the opportunity to thank his fellow citizens who contributed to the effectiveness of their country in the presidency of the EAC. However, it encourages them to increase production in order to export much more of their local products that can generate foreign exchange.
