After the defeat against Vasco, the president of América-MG, Marcus Salum, criticized the refereeing of the game that took place at Independência, in the 15th round of the Brazilian Championship. In statements after the match, he characterized the referee’s performance as an “Operation Salva Vasco” – the rival, with the victory, left the championship’s relegation zone.
“Unfortunately, what we saw here today is the operation that saved Vasco. And what we saw here is the following: the shirt weighs again in Brazilian football. What was done to America here today was a shame. According to Salum, Vasco’s goal should still have been disallowed, according to him because there was a foul on Paulinho’s part during the play. “We will find a way: our best player is sent off. Now just go to VAR and look at Vasco’s goal. In the play before Vasco’s goal, our defender suffered a foul, Paulinho went with the sole. Everyone went to the judge asking him to look at the VAR and he said it wasn’t for expulsion. How come it wasn’t for expulsion? It was a foul. If it wasn’t for expulsion, it was at least a foul. He had to cancel the goal, because it was an indecent foul”, he said.
