BLED, Slovenia, (Xinhua) — The European Union (EU) must be ready for its next enlargement in 2030, European Council President Charles Michel said at the Bled Strategy Forum on Monday.
“Now enlargement is no longer a dream. It’s time to move on,” Michel said in his speech at the forum, a two-day international conference that this year focused on solidarity and global security.
“I think we need to be ready… for enlargement in 2030,” he said.
Michel said the EU aims to “help build a multipolar world anchored in global cooperation.”
Jointly organized by the Slovenian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Center for European Perspective, the annual forum is one of the major international conferences in the region.
The countries of the Western Balkans have the goal of joining the EU. Ukraine and Moldova are among the candidates for EU membership. The last enlargement of the EU took place in 2013, when Croatia joined the bloc.
