Surinamese President Chandrikapersad Santokhi will travel to the Netherlands on Saturday for a medical examination. He does this on the advice of his medical team of Surinamese and foreign doctors, his office reports.
It concerns additional research after a medical screening in Suriname, reports the Waterkant news site. The 64-year-old Santokhi is said to be in ‘optimal condition’ and to stay in the Netherlands for a few days. The site Starnieuws writes about ‘the departure of the president, in the middle of a crisis situation’, referring to the financial problems in the country.
Protests in Paramaribo
In mid-February, protests in the capital Paramaribo got completely out of hand. The parliament building was also stormed. The police were widely criticized at the time for being ill-prepared for announced grimness. Surinamese media wrote that the security services had failed, because it had long been known that ‘troublemakers’ would mingle with the demonstrators. At least 26 people were injured in the protests. The reason many people took to the streets was, among other things, that the prices of everyday products had become much too high in their eyes.
A week ago there was a new and grandly announced protest in the Surinamese capital. The new protest campaign under the motto Everything Flat, directed against the economic policies of President Santokhi, rallied more than a hundred people. In the center of Paramaribo, where things went terribly wrong last time, all shops remained closed, Waterkant reported.
