Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has affirmed the country’s commitment to achieving battlefield success by the end of the year, despite acknowledging the slow progress in Kyiv’s counteroffensive in the occupied south. Speaking in a video link interview at the Reuters NEXT conference in New York, Zelenskiy stated that Ukraine remains determined and sure of eventual success in the war, even as the conflict approaches its 21st month.

Zelenskiy mentioned a battlefield plan for 2024, but noted that he could not disclose the details. He emphasized that while the situation is difficult, the Ukrainian forces are working on concrete directions and making progress in both the south and east. The President also highlighted their efforts to establish a bridgehead in the Kherson region near the Dnipro River, which was liberated in Ukraine’s counteroffensive a year ago.

Acknowledging the need for unity among Ukrainians, Zelenskiy called on Western leaders to support the country as it continues its fight. He expressed gratitude for military assistance from the West, while also urging for swifter decisions on providing support.

The President also addressed concerns about potential shifts in U.S. policy towards Ukraine, particularly with the upcoming presidential election. Zelenskiy said that while it is up to U.S. citizens to elect a new president, some voices from the Republican party were causing concern among Ukrainians.

On the diplomatic front, Zelenskiy referenced the distraction caused by the unfolding war in Gaza but stressed the importance of continued support for Ukraine, which he described as essential for preventing a migrant crisis in the event of the country’s defeat.

Hours before the interview, the European Union’s executive published a report recommending that the trade bloc’s members agree to launch accession talks with Ukraine once certain conditions are met. Zelenskiy described this as a “successful day” for Ukraine and a “very important signal,” citing the progress made in anti-corruption reform, which is crucial for the country’s European Union bid.

Looking towards post-war reconstruction, the President emphasized the need for reforms and funds to ensure corruption-free rebuilding. He called for the release of frozen Russian assets to be used for the rebuilding of Ukraine, indicating that progress has already been made in using interests on some of these assets.

The remarks by President Zelenskiy come as Ukraine continues to grapple with the ongoing conflict with Russia, with hopes for achieving battlefield success and garnering international support remaining steadfast.
