Korea-ASEAN relations upgraded to the highest level… Interested in completing Korea-Japan talks
President Yoon Seok-yeol will embark on a tour of three Southeast Asian countries on the 6th to attend the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) summit.
President Yoon and his wife, First Lady Kim Kun-hee, will visit the Philippines, Singapore, and Laos one after another for 5 nights and 6 days.
First, President Yoon and his wife will make a state visit to the Philippines, their first destination.
On the first day in the capital city of Manila, President Yoon and his wife are scheduled to lay a wreath at the Korean War Memorial and attend a banquet for Filipino compatriots.
The next day, the 7th, they will lay a wreath at the monument honoring Philippine independence hero Jose Rizal and then attend an official welcoming ceremony hosted by the Philippine president and his wife.
President Yoon then holds a summit meeting with President Ferdinand Romualdez Marcos Jr., followed by a memorandum of understanding (MOU) exchange ceremony and a joint press release.
The state visit to the Philippines will conclude with the Korea-Philippines Business Forum.
President Yoon and his wife will also visit the next country, Singapore, as state guests.
Starting with an official welcoming ceremony on the 8th, President Yoon and his wife will meet with President Tarman, then hold a summit meeting with Prime Minister Lawrence Wing, a treaty and MOU signing ceremony, and a joint press release.
In addition, a meeting with former Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, a Korea-Singapore business forum, and a state dinner await President Yoon.
President Yoon also plans to deliver a speech on the topic of the vision for unification of the Korean Peninsula at the ‘Singapore Lecture’ hosted by the Southeast Asian Institute under the Singapore government on the 9th.
Lastly, President Yoon visits Vientiane, Laos, where the ASEAN Summit is being held.
President Yoon will attend the ASEAN+3 (Korea, China, Japan) summit, starting with the Korea-ASEAN summit on the 10th. Bilateral meetings are also scheduled with major ASEAN countries, including Laos, Vietnam, and Thailand.
President Yoon will conclude his tour schedule with the East Asia Summit (EAS) on the 11th.
President Yoon, who announced the Korea-ASEAN solidarity initiative at the ASEAN Summit last year, plans to establish a comprehensive strategic partnership with ASEAN and elevate Korea-ASEAN relations to the highest level.
President Yoon envisions strengthening cooperation in all directions with ASEAN, whose strategic value is increasing in areas such as security and supply chains.
Whether or not the Korea-Japan summit will be held is also a factor to watch. If the meeting is held, it will be the first Korea-Japan summit held by President Yoon with the newly inaugurated Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba.
