President Yoon Seok-yeol said on the 19th that he is confident that the Czech government will successfully complete its bid to build a new nuclear power plant.

On this day, the Blue House reported that President Yoon had a written interview with Reuters ahead of his visit to the Czech Republic from the 19th to the 22nd.

In the Reuters interview, President Yoon said, “We will communicate closely with the Czech government to ensure that the final contract is concluded smoothly and the project is successfully completed,” adding, “What is of paramount importance is the success of the new Czech nuclear power plant project.”

The Czech Republic selected Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power as the preferred bidder for a new nuclear power plant construction project worth 24 trillion won in July. However, Westinghouse, an American nuclear power company, and EDF, a French power company, have raised objections. Westinghouse claims that KHNP used its original technology, and EDF has expressed dissatisfaction with the selection of the supplier.

Regarding the intellectual property dispute with Westinghouse and others, President Yoon said, “The governments of Korea and the United States are working to create a friendly atmosphere between companies, and I believe that through this, the dispute between companies from both countries will also be resolved amicably.”

President Yoon emphasized, “Under the strong ROK-U.S. alliance, there is sufficient consensus on the need for cooperation in nuclear power between the two countries,” and “There is no need to worry about the nuclear power plant project.”

He also emphasized, “As illegal military and economic cooperation between Russia and North Korea has intensified since the Ukrainian War, the need to strengthen cooperation with European countries that share our values, including the Czech Republic, has become more evident.”

In particular, he emphasized strategic cooperation with countries that share values, such as the Czech Republic, and said, “We will seek joint response measures with the Czech government to North Korea’s continued nuclear and missile development and illegal military cooperation between Russia and North Korea.”

Regarding the “red line” of Russia-North Korea military cooperation, he stated that an answer based on assumptions would not be appropriate, but emphasized that “any act that threatens the safety and lives of our people cannot be tolerated,” and “We make it clear that there will be a price to pay if our security is threatened.”

President Yoon’s visit to the Czech Republic comes as Korea and the Czech Republic celebrate the 35th anniversary of diplomatic relations next year. President Yoon is scheduled to hold a private and expanded meeting with Czech President Petr Pavel and inspect a nuclear power plant facility together with Prime Minister Petr Fiala.
