Amid concerns over a medical emergency ahead of the Chuseok holiday, President Yoon Seok-yeol visited the emergency medical center of a hospital in northern Gyeonggi Province on the 4th.
According to the Blue House, President Yoon is scheduled to tour a regional emergency medical center in Gyeonggi Province this evening and then meet with hospital officials.
President Yoon is expected to convey to hospital officials, “I sympathize with the fact that medical staff are having a hard time due to the high intensity of emergency room work, but the government’s fee policy and medical system do not sufficiently reflect the difficulties on the ground, and that the compensation is unfair despite the high intensity and high risk of accidents compared to doctors who specialize in skin care or non-covered services.”
In addition, it was reported that he will state, “We will ensure that people can enjoy fair medical services without discrimination, regardless of where they live. We will also drastically strengthen support for essential medical personnel, including emergency, obstetric, pediatric, and critically ill patients, and resolve issues of legal risks and fair compensation for medical professionals.”
An official from the Blue House met with reporters that day and explained the background of President Yoon’s visit to the medical field, saying, “It is to encourage the medical staff who are dedicated to the health of the people and to hear the vivid voices and diverse opinions from the medical field,” and “It is to request that emergency rooms operate without a hitch during the Chuseok holiday.”
President Yoon’s visit to the medical field is his ninth since announcing the medical reform in February of this year. An official from the presidential office explained, “President Yoon visited medical institutions in Seoul, Gyeonggi, Chungnam, and Busan to listen to opinions from the field, and based on these opinions, he established a medical reform plan, including raising essential medical fees and investing 10 trillion won in the budget over five years.”
