The results of an opinion poll were released on the 9th showing that President Yoon Seok-yeol’s approval rating for state affairs has been below 30% for two consecutive weeks. In terms of party approval ratings, the Democratic Party of Korea received 40.1%, while the People Power Party received 34.6%.

In a poll conducted by polling firm Realmeter from the 2nd to the 6th on 2,508 eligible voters aged 18 or older for the first week of September at the request of the Energy Economy Newspaper, the positive evaluation response rate for President Yoon rose 0.3 percentage points from the previous week to 29.9%.

In particular, the approval rating for the president’s state administration is the third lowest since President Yoon began his term. President Yoon’s approval rating hit a low of 29.3% in the first week of August 2022, and 29.6% last week, the second lowest since his term began.

The negative evaluation was 66.1%, down 0.6%p from the previous week. The difference between positive and negative evaluations was 36.2%p.

A Realmeter official explained, “It has been gradually declining, maintaining the 29-30% range throughout the week,” and “Policy risks, such as the worsening emergency room shortage and suspicions of favoritism in surgery, have established themselves as negative factors in the current standoff.”

He added, “In the case of the ruling and opposition parties-medical and political consultative body where the participation of the medical community is key, careful political power is likely to be required as the conflict has been prolonged.”

In a party approval rating survey conducted on 1,001 adults on the 5th and 6th, the People Power Party recorded 34.6%, up 1.8%p from the previous week. The Democratic Party of Korea recorded 40.1%, down 2.1%p from the previous week. The gap in approval ratings between the two major parties narrowed to 5.5%p, within the margin of error in a week.

The Fatherland Innovation Party fell 0.2%p from the previous week to 7.8%. This was followed by △nonpartisan layer 8.6% (1.2%p↑ from the previous week), △Fatherland Innovation Party 7.8% (0.2%p↓), △Reform New Party 4.1% (0.2%↑), △Progressive Party 2.2% (same), and △Other parties 2.5% (0.6%p↑).

The New Future Democratic Party has become an extra-parliamentary party and has been excluded from this week’s survey. Last week, the New Future Democratic Party’s approval rating was 1.6%.

A Realmeter official analyzed, “The Democratic Party of Korea has maintained the 40% level for four weeks by continuing to push for controversial bills such as the Special Prosecutor’s Act on Chae Sang-byeong and the Local Currency Act.”

In addition, he explained, “The People Power Party’s increase was only marginal compared to the previous week due to the simultaneous effects of positive and negative factors, such as the proposal for a consultative body between the ruling and opposition parties, the medical and government ministries, and the suspicion that Supreme Council member In Yo-han requested surgery, amid the continued vacuum in the emergency medical system.”

Meanwhile, this survey was conducted using a wireless (97%) and landline (3%) automatic response method and a random phone call method using a randomly generated sampling frame. The sampling error of the approval rating for the president’s state administration is ±2.0%p at a 95% confidence level, and the response rate is 2.7%, and the sampling error of the approval rating for political parties is ±3.1%p at a 95% confidence level, and the response rate is 2.5%.
