As the number of signatures on the National Assembly petition calling for the impeachment of President Yoon Seok-yeol surpassed 1 million, the Democratic Party of Korea suggested the possibility of holding an “impeachment hearing” and began pressuring President Yoon and the ruling party. The People Power Party responded by saying, “They are abusing the impeachment petition as a political tool.”

According to the National Assembly Open National Assembly Information Portal on the 3rd, the number of people agreeing with the national petition to impeach President Yoon exceeded 1 million at around 10:30 am that day. It has been 13 days since the petition was posted on the 20th of last month. At the Supreme Council meeting that day, Democratic Party floor leader Park Chan-dae said, “Even if we scold him and hit him with a whip, the president is unmoved and is like the wind blowing through my body, so 1 million people are joining the impeachment petition in a short period of less than two weeks,” and “In order for the state affairs, which are on the verge of collapse, to get back on track, the president must change first.” Supreme Council member Jeong Cheong-rae mentioned the website being paralyzed at one point during the same meeting and argued, “If the access had been smooth, it would have exceeded 5 million,” and “This is the voice of the people demanding that we pass judgment on the Yoon Seok-yeol administration and the People Power Party.”

The Democratic Party said it may hold a hearing regarding the impeachment of President Yoon. Kang Yoo-jung, the Democratic Party’s floor spokesperson, said in a briefing at the National Assembly Communication Center, “We will conduct a strict review through the petition review subcommittee of the Legislation and Judiciary Committee and the plenary session. If necessary, we will also conduct procedures such as a hearing.” According to the National Assembly’s national petition system, a petition with more than 50,000 signatures must be reviewed by the Legislation and Judiciary Committee.

However, the Democratic Party is not pushing for a hearing right away. Spokesperson Kang met with reporters after the briefing and explained, “We will do it if necessary during the review process, but there has been no response from the party yet. The schedule for the Legislative and Judiciary Committee’s petition subcommittee has not been set yet.”

The People Power Party countered, saying, “More people agreed with the petition to impeach former President Moon Jae-in.” Senior Spokesperson Kwak Gyu-taek met with reporters at the National Assembly that day and said, “We cannot help but deplore the Democratic Party’s behavior of abusing the petition as a political tool and a means of political strife.” He added, “During the Moon Jae-in administration, over 1.4 million citizens petitioned the Blue House National Petition calling for the impeachment of President Moon.” People Power Party lawmaker Kwon Seong-dong also asked, “Did the Democratic Party push for an impeachment hearing on President Moon at the time just because it had over 1 million signatures?”
