President Yoon’s performance in state affairs… ‘positive’ 30.0% vs ‘negative’ 64.4%

The results of an opinion poll were released on the 26th, showing that President Yoon Seok-yeol’s approval rating for state affairs fell for the second week in a row, recording 30.0%. In terms of party approval ratings, the Democratic Party of Korea received 40%, while the People Power Party received 37%. The ruling party’s approval rating showed a large increase, rising 6 percentage points (p) from the previous week.

In a public opinion poll conducted by Realmeter, a public opinion polling firm, from the 19th to the 23rd on 2,506 adults at the request of the Energy Economy Newspaper for the 4th week of August, the positive evaluation response rate for President Yoon was 30.0%, down 0.7%p from the previous week.

The negative evaluation rose 1.0%p from the previous week to 64.4%. The difference between positive and negative evaluations was 36.4%p, which is outside the margin of error.

A Realmeter official analyzed, “The Democratic Party’s support after the national convention and the confrontation over the independence movement has not been able to fully display its resilience to recovery due to unstable factors such as the ‘suspicion of Ms. Kim Kun-hee receiving a bag’ and the ‘Fukushima contaminated water dispute.'”

In a political party approval rating survey conducted on 1,000 voters aged 18 and over nationwide on the 22nd and 23rd, the People Power Party recorded 37%, up 6 percentage points from the previous week. The Democratic Party of Korea recorded 40%, down 2.2 percentage points.

The gap in approval ratings between the two major political parties is 3 percentage points, a close race within the margin of error. The Fatherland Innovation Party recorded 7.7%, down 2 percentage points from the previous week, hitting a new low.

The Reform Party rose 0.5%p to 3.6%, the Progressive Party fell 0.3%p to 1.1%, and the New Future Party fell 0.8%p to 1.4%. Other parties were at 1.4%, and the nonpartisan group was at 7.9%.

A Realmeter official explained, “After the Democratic Party’s national convention, the approval ratings for the Democratic Party and the People Power Party are in a close race within the margin of error,” and “The two parties are continuing their ‘representative vs. representative’ structure after the general elections in April, and the standing committee strife is continuing.”

He then interpreted it as “the People Power Party under Representative Han Dong-hoon seeking to increase its competitiveness in support by leading with policy issues such as ‘establishing a special committee to resolve the gap’ and ‘abolishing the gold investment tax.'”

This survey was conducted using a wireless (97%) and landline (3%) automatic response method and a random phone call method using a randomly generated sampling frame. The sampling error of the approval rating for the president’s state administration is ±2.0%p at a 95% confidence level, and the response rate is 2.8%. The sampling error of the approval rating for political parties is ±3.1%p at a 95% confidence level, and the response rate is 2.5%.
