The results of an opinion poll were released on the 16th, showing that President Yoon Seok-yeol’s approval rating for his state affairs fell below 30% for three consecutive weeks, the lowest level since his inauguration. In terms of party approval ratings, the Democratic Party was ahead of the People Power Party by 6.6 percentage points (p), well outside the margin of error.

In a poll conducted by polling firm Realmeter from the 9th to the 13th on 2,503 eligible voters aged 18 or older for the second week of September at the request of the Energy Economy Newspaper, the positive evaluation response rate for President Yoon was 27.0%, down 2.9 percentage points from the previous week.

This is the lowest level since President Yoon began his term. The previous low was 29.3% recorded in the first week of August 2022.

The negative evaluation was 68.7%, up 2.6%p from the previous week. The difference between positive and negative evaluations was 41.7%p, outside the margin of error.

A Realmeter official said, “The ideological conservatives and the weakening of their support base have led to the collapse of the majority support line, and the red light has been turned on for the state administration’s momentum,” adding, “Amid the opposition party’s continued strong attacks on the ‘suspicions surrounding Ms. Kim Kun-hee’ and the ‘special prosecutor’s law for Chae Sang-byung,’ difficulties continue, such as the failure to form an early ‘ruling and opposition party consultative body’ before Chuseok.”

He continued, “The perceived price of Chuseok shopping baskets, which runs counter to the optimism about stimulating domestic demand, is also a negative factor for public opinion on the livelihood of the people,” and said, “Given the current trend, we cannot help but worry about a ‘battle of criticism’ at the Chuseok dinner table. We need to examine whether ‘public sentiment turning away from the market after the holiday’ will become entrenched.”

In a party approval rating survey conducted on 1,001 adults on the 12th and 13th, the People Power Party recorded 33.0%, down 1.6%p from the previous week. The Democratic Party of Korea recorded 39.6%, down 0.5%p from the previous week. The gap in approval ratings between the two major parties widened to 6.6%p, outside the margin of error.

The Fatherland Innovation Party rose 2.9%p from the previous week to 10.7%, rising to the 10% range for the first time in two months since the second week of July. It was followed by the following: △Independent voters 9.8% (↑1.2%p from the previous week), △Reform New Party 4.2% (↑0.1%p), △Progressive Party 0.9% (↓1.4%p), and △Other parties 1.8% (↓0.7%p).

A Realmeter official said, “The Democratic Party is trying to expand its political sphere with Lee Jae-myung’s dinner politics and Kim Kun-hee’s offensive, while maintaining its advantage over the ruling party with its livelihood-oriented party theories such as the local currency law and the 250,000 won subsidy.”

He continued, “The People Power Party has overcome the opposition party’s political strife by postponing the deliberation of the special prosecutor bill and other bills in the National Assembly plenary session, but is facing continued difficulties in expanding the party’s support base both internally and externally due to issues such as the ‘2nd trial guilty verdict for the former owner of Deutsche Motors’ and the ‘difficulties in launching the legislative consultative body early.'”

Meanwhile, this survey was conducted using a wireless (97%) and landline (3%) automatic response method and a random phone call method using a randomly generated sampling frame. The sampling error of the approval rating for the president’s state administration is ±2.0%p at a 95% confidence level, and the response rate is 2.8%, and the sampling error of the approval rating for political parties is ±3.1%p at a 95% confidence level, and the response rate is 2.6%.
