Snake Island gained prominence at the start of the war in February, when an audio recording captured Ukrainian border guards on the island defiantly rejecting an order from a Russian warship to surrender, responding with a memorable burst of profanity. The video posted on Saturday by President Zelensky paid tribute to the “heroes” who fought for Snake Island, describing the battle that ultimately forced Russian troops to withdraw in June as “one of the most important” since the full-scale invasion.

The war has profoundly reshaped Ukraine’s relationship with the world, bolstering its bid to join NATO and transforming President Zelensky into a diplomatic force. Zelensky has seized on global attention to rally support and secure billions in military aid to defend against Russian invaders. Recently, he launched a highly anticipated counteroffensive to reclaim occupied territory, a campaign that is currently under intense scrutiny.
Ukraine views NATO membership as the ultimate guarantee of its security. While Zelensky acknowledges that the country won’t be joining NATO immediately due to the risk of direct military conflict with Russia, he has consistently urged member countries to establish a timetable for acceptance. In his pursuit of NATO membership, Zelensky embarked on a diplomatic offensive ahead of the summit. President Erdogan, following their meeting, expressed his belief that Ukraine “deserves NATO membership without a doubt.”
However, President Biden, who is scheduled to attend the summit during his European trip, stated in an interview with CNN that Ukraine’s acceptance into NATO is more likely to occur after the war. He cited the lack of unanimity within NATO due to the ongoing conflict as a key factor.
President Biden defended the decision to provide Ukraine with cluster munitions, despite their ban in several allied nations. He underscored the necessity of this temporary measure to prevent Ukraine from being defenseless against Russia, stating that it will only be in place until conventional artillery rounds production can be increased.
Meanwhile, Ukraine’s month-long counteroffensive has resulted in limited gains against Russian forces. Despite support from Western allies, Ukrainian forces have incurred casualties and lost some of their newer tanks and armored vehicles during fierce engagements. Russian forces have continued to launch attacks on Ukrainian towns and villages far from the front lines.
On Saturday morning, Ukraine’s Air Force reported intercepting five Iranian-made attack drones overnight. However, several others managed to evade air defenses and caused damage to industrial and infrastructure sites in two regions of Ukraine. One person was injured when drones hit the city of Kryvyi Rih, resulting in fires and the destruction of equipment and warehouses.
Artillery strikes were also reported in the Kharkiv region in northeastern Ukraine and the Kherson region in the south, which has suffered relentless Russian bombardment.
On the eve of the 500th day, the United Nations confirmed the deaths of more than 9,000 civilians, including over 500 children, since the full-scale invasion. The organization called it a “grim milestone” in a war that continues to inflict a devastating toll, cautioning that the actual number of casualties is likely much higher.
