In their marathon campaign, the candidates had only a few minutes to stop in front of the lens of our photographers. For the 2012 presidential election, we asked the candidates for the Élysée to photograph themselves using a trigger. Five years ago, they played the models in a blue-white-red decor. For this edition, we had them pose with the symbol of the Republic, the bust of Marianne.
In our studios or in their HQ, they lent themselves to the exercise. Some taking her in their arms (with precautions, because the lady is in plaster and therefore easily breakable), others gazing at her or just standing by her side. Jean-Luc Mélenchon, passionate about history, immediately recognized the model with which we had them pose. The one made in 1879 by the sculptor Théodore Doriot. “It’s the one I prefer, the most republican”, welcomed the Insoumis.
While posing, Marine Le Pen said she had a reproduction of Marianne in her office, but one with the image of… Brigitte Bardot. The communist Fabien Roussel is more… Laetitia Casta. Only two candidates refused to take part in the exercise, the two Trotskyists Nathalie Arthaud (LO) and Philippe Poutou (NPA). “The principle of this portrait does not correspond to us”, explained the latter.
