The nuclear accidents at Fukushima and Chernobyl have had a lasting impact over the past three decades. In addition to these human catastrophes, there are questions about the management of radioactive waste. However, at present, nuclear energy is one of the least lethal sources of energy. At equivalent energy production, it is 351 times less deadly than coal, 40 times less than gas and barely twice as much as wind power, according to the estimate of Our World in Data based on a study published in The Lancetand another in the Journal of Cleaner Production.
To correctly assess nuclear power, it is therefore necessary to take into account its dangers, the way its risks are managed, but also the benefits of this low-carbon energy in the fight against global warming.
