The political crisis in Lebanon worsened after the parliamentary session for the presidential election broke up without a decision. As President Michel Aoun’s term expires next month, Parliament convened to find a successor.
Out of 128 parliamentarians, 122 participated in the first phase of voting. Most of them put blank ballot paper in the box. Speaker Nabih Beri declared the election invalid as 66 people did not vote.
The presidential election also remains in limbo amid a serious economic crisis following political insecurity.
Michel Moward, son of former president René Moward, won 36 votes but fell short of the 86 votes needed to reach the first round.
In 2016, the country was left without a president for 29 months after failing to find a unanimous candidate for the presidency. A similar crisis exists.
