According to high-level government sources, the government is making arrangements to hold the presidential election in January next year (2024).

The reports also say that the government is preparing to postpone the local council elections for this reason.

A couple of months ago, President Ranil Wickremesinghe, the President of the United National Party and Vajira Abeywardena, the Secretary of the United National Party, called the National Organizer of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna, Basil Rajapaksa.

Both of them sought Basil’s support from the Buddist Party to field President Ranil Wickremesinghe as the general candidate.

Vajira had told Basil that he could win with Motu – UNP votes, Tamil Muslim votes in the North-East and the votes of the hilly people.

Meanwhile, it has now been reported that Basil also gave the green flag to field Ranil Wickramasinghe as the general candidate.
